Snowflakes for Christmas

This is a pattern from a designer on Ravelry.  It is called Ariel and her’s is beautiful! I’m not too pleased with mine so far, though. I will finish it today. There are only 8 rows and it has taken me (as usual) a little extra time to figure out her terminology. The chart on the last page helps a lot. I was thinking of adding it to my handmade Christmas tree this year if I don’t send as a gift.

The photo makes her snowflake look tiny, but it is about 5” across so think I am right with gauge.

I just made up a coaster while watch a football game. Hard to sit still and do nothing, and didn’t want to snack! I was off at the end, ending up with the wrong amount of shells (miss the first stitch) so added it at the end. Good thing it is for me! LOL!

Just made the one to keep at my chair. I have to hide them from Ginger who seems to go hunting for trouble when I leave the room!

Have a great hump day!

Some of my Favorite Projects

I FINISHED THIS FOR MY NEPHEW 14 YEARS AGO. I STARTED IT WHEN HE WAS A  YOUNG TEEN! EACH SQUARE IS THE SIZE OF THE BLACK ONE AND SEWN TOGETHER. EXHAUSTING!

I MADE THIS FOR MY YOUNGER BROTHER. I LOVED THE WAY IT TURNED OUT, BUT WISH I HAD NOT USED THE BURNT ORANGE COLOR. IT'S IN ONE OF THE VANNA WHITE PATTERN BOOKS (NEPHEW'S DAD).

I MADE THIS FOR MY NIECE WHEN SHE WAS ABOUT 6 OR 8 YEARS OLD. SHE HAS FOUR CHILDREN OF HER OWN NOW (DAUGHTER OF YOUNGER BROTHER, SISTER TO NEPHEW)

I MADE THESE FOR MY NIECE, DAUGHTER OF MY HUSBAND'S SISTER

MORE OF THE AFGHAN I MADE FOR YOUNGER BROTHER, BEING HELD BY HIS BEAUTIFUL WIFE, MY BABY SISSY

A PRETTY SQUARE I DESIGNED. I REALLY LOVED THE COLORS!

MY FIRST SHAWL…SERFINA. I THINK THAT IS THE RIGHT SPELLING. I REALLY LOVED MAKING IT.

ONE OF THE SEVERAL CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SCENE DOLLS. SENT TO MY YOUNGEST NIECE.

ANOTHER SQUARE I DESIGNED. SHOULD HAVE WRITTEN THEM UP, BUT GUESS I STILL CAN ONE DAY.

SHOES FROM ONE OF THE CROCHET BOOKS FOR TODDLERS. GAVE THEM TO MY FIRST GRANDCHILD

ANOTHER SERAFINA SHAWL. (SERAPHINA??)

PART OF THE MANY SQUARES OF CAT FACES I MADE FOR MY OLDER BROTHERS WIFE, MY OTHER SISSY. SHE AND I ARE THE SAME AGE (SHE IS OLDER BY 36 DAYS!)

I MADE THIS EEYORE FOR MY YOUNGEST GRANDDAUGHTER. I DON'T THINK HER MOM EVER GAVE IT TO HER. IT WAS TO BE PUT IN A FRAME.

I MADE THESE FOR A SWAP I THINK….???? MAYBE I KEPT THEM???

ANOTHER CAT FACE FOR THE AFGHAN. IT TURNED OUT GREAT!

If you want to know about any of the patterns just leave me a message and I'll go look them up!

Happy Crocheting, Knitting, and crafting!

Coasters and other little things...

 NOT  A  HALLOWEEN  CONTEST!

In my group on Ravelry we are doing a "contest" of sorts where you have to make something for one of the three holidays coming up and be finished by 10/30 (or is it 31?). I am not part of the drawing so I get to make whatever I want. I am using the Maple Leaves for part of a gift package for Christmas so that counts!  I am going to make a Christmas Stocking, too, although may not finish it in time. There is always another contest down the road!

The two greens are actually the same coasters. I think the true color lies somewhere in-between, but am leaning more toward the one below.  I started using a pattern, and then veered off as I am often inclined to do.

The Maple Leaf coasters are a pattern on Ravelry, Fall Leaves by Michelle. I'm not sure she was the first to come up with the pattern as there is another one on Ravelry that is a little older and posted first. I don't like the leaf tail/stem too much as it kind of gets in the way. If I make these again, I will leave that part off.

Finally have blinds in my home. Six weeks and nothing on the windows. Good thing my house has few windows facing the street and none except the kind you can't see through facing the neighbors! This is the large dining room window. I wish I had asked for two blinds like I did in the study. I don't know why I didn't think of it. I have another one in front that is split into to windows that open, and should have had that one done up in two blinds also. That way you can open only one blind to let in air.

These blinds have made a huge difference in the temperature in the house, too. That is certainly great considering how hot it gets. With the spray foam insulation I am hoping for a less expensive electric bill now.  I ordered them on special from Lowe's. They are Bali's and asked them to be made with ZERO light so I can close them up flat. I hate it when I get new blinds that are off the shelf and they are set to allow some light to come in. I know that I have to have some circulation at the bottom to prevent moisture from accumulating on the glass and dripping.

This is the sunset in front of my home. I think the ones in WA were prettier as you did not see houses, just trees at the bottom…but it is quite lovely nonetheless.

I have been busy unpacking boxes. I think this will be the part of my life that goes on and on and on! I have been doing it for 50 years. I don't think in all that time as an adult I have unpacked all the boxes from a move except one time. Maybe two. Considering I have moved over 40 times, that is a lot of unpacked boxes. Hopefully things will open up soon and thrift stores will start accepting donations.  If not, I might just put the donation boxes on the street with a "FREE" sign attached!

I finally had a doctor appointment to transfer all my records. I need to get a vet for the dogs and get them licensed here. In-between I must get my drivers license. I have the car registered here, but still need to transfer the title. For some reason in TX they don't seem to care where your car is titled! I have the utilities in my name, I have a TV service (not that great!!) and internet.

Just need to keep Ginger from chewing up the fence!

THREE MONTHS? WOW!!

I find it hard to believe that I have been off line for three months. I guess that birthday was exhausting!  It has mainly been an effort to get ready for selling the house in WA state moving, and now unpacking. The new home is below….I live in Texas now! Quite a different life here. Most houses are built with either brick or rock or a combination of both. In my subdivision the houses do look a lot alike. I was trying to get them to put some of the front in wood, but I was too late for the order. They had one like that in another subdivision and I fell in love. Some day, when I am rich, I may have the front redone and the deep dark brown wood put in to make it feel like a ranch home.

The house sits on 1/2 acre and there isn't much land in front. Most in back, so we walk a lot around in back. Will soon have something other than grass back there! I now walk about 3 miles a day. Can't walk them because of my arthritis and bursitis. Shouldn't have big dogs.

The dogs seem to think they are doing all the work!  So many boxes…the garage is plum full. Just like every other house. However, my niece is here cracking the whip and helping get rid of the packing boxes and supplies, as well as helping in the garage. She is amazing! Has even been bringing me left overs for dinner and she is a great cook, too! Nice to have her living so close!

My next door neighbors to the south side are a young couple with two children, one 5 year old Pitty mix, and her mom who lives in the cabana! They built an apartment in the back yard for her.

My dogs became awful once they heard their children playing and the dog in the yard. Our old neighbors didn't have dogs in their backyards. Ginger started chewing up the fence. The four dogs had a little runway going in front of the fence as they ran back and forth.  After a couple of weeks we worked out a routine and text each other when the dogs went out. It has really been good as far as the dogs now not barking and snarling and tearing up the fence.

BUT:  Along came BarxBuddy. What a great idea and it works like a charm.  I have been able to keep the dogs from barking at the children and running back and forth in front of the fence. Now we hope by tomorrow or Monday I'll be able to stop the "dog wants to eat dog" behavior when she puts her dog out and I put mine out at the same time. These people are great and should be able to enjoy their backyard, too.  I hate it that my dogs have been so bratty. I pray this will be the answer.

OCTOBER:

I am having a contest in my group on Ravelry just to have something to do and to get rid of some of my yarn (which takes up about 1/3 of the garage!).  It is a holiday contest, just make something to do with Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas, and then I draw your number out of a hat (or pot). Maybe draw two.  Anything to have a distraction! Nothing fancy as far as a contest goes, but EASY!

Happy October!

I had a birthday not long ago…..

I bought super tall candles so that I could get them all lit before the first ones burned all the way down. These seemed to be slow burning, which was a good thing as it took me awhile to light 73 candles!

Blew them out with a puff or two, not thinking I should to it all at once. Didn't even make a wish! That's what a pandemic of many kinds will do what we once thought "normal."

The yellow candles look orange on here. I didn't put any orange candles on my cake.

I bought the cake at Costco. It was very good!

Haven't been doing much in the way of crafting.  Just have had the doldrums on and off, mainly due to my back and feet pain….and having no help in the house. It was going downhill fast! Finally the state opened up to house help, which could not have come at a better time (unless it happened a month ago!).

The dogs are still driving me up a wall! So much better than 5 months ago, l but still pretty destructive.  Hard to walk out back without putting your foot in a small hole. Luckily I am learning to   walk without tripping in them! Plus can't leave them unsupervised in the larger part of the yard as they like to rip apart my little trees. One has died, one almost, and the rest have made a comeback.

Right now I am working on two different scarves. Haven't progressed any further on the shawl yet. The scarves are my normal sc/dbl crochet stitch going back and forth. I like the texture, and it works up fairly quickly.

Both are in Malabrigo Rios.
Photos and color names to follow!

Have a good day!

BACK TO OUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING

UPDATE

I'm just starting Section Three. You can see the blue edging on the blue/cream chain mail on the left. Not much further along than that.

I plan on finishing this and probably send it to a charity since I can't find a taker in my family.  Still waiting for a couple of replies.

Ginger enjoying one of her 'bones' - trying hard to keep an eye on them so when they start destroying them I take them away and toss them. Real bones are harder to catch.

I hope all are doing well, crafting, staying home safely and that you are all okay emotionally and financially. Such a hard time to be needing to work for sure.

Blessings

BEWARE OF COVID SCAMS!!

Watch Out for Coronavirus Scams

Fraudsters and scam artists are always looking for new ways to prey on  consumers.  Now they are using the same  tactics to take advantage of consumers' heightened financial and health concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.  Federal, state,  and local law enforcement have begun issuing warnings on the surge of coronavirus scams and how consumers can protect themselves.  Here are some of the more prevalent coronavirus scams that consumers need to watch out for.

Schemes related to economic impact payments

The IRS recently issued a warning about various  schemes related to  economic impact payments that are being sent  to taxpayers under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.1 The IRS warns taxpayers to be aware of scammers who:
  • Use words such as  "stimulus check" or "stimulus payment" instead of the official term, "economic impact payment"
  • Ask you to "sign up" for your economic impact payment check
  • Contact you by phone, email, text or social media for  verification of personal and/or banking information to receive or speed up your economic impact payment
In most cases, the IRS will deposit the  economic impact payment directly into an account that taxpayers previously provided on their tax returns.  If taxpayers have  previously filed their taxes  but not provided direct-deposit information to the IRS, they will be able to provide their banking information online at  irs.gov/coronavirus.  If the IRS does not have a taxpayer's direct-deposit information, a check will be mailed to the taxpayer's address on file with the IRS. In addition, the IRS is reminding Social Security recipients who normally don't file taxes that no additional action or information is needed on their part to receive the $1,200 economic payment — it will be sent to them automatically.

Fraudulent  treatments, vaccinations, and home test kits

The Federal Trade Commission is tracking scam artists who are attempting to sell fraudulent products that claim to treat, prevent, or diagnose COVID-19. Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved any products designed specifically to treat or prevent COVID-19.
The FDA had warned consumers in March to be wary  of companies selling unauthorized coronavirus home testing kits.  On April 21, 2020, the FDA authorized the first coronavirus test kit for home use.  According to the FDA, the test kits will be available to consumers in most states, with a doctor's order, in the coming weeks. You can visit fda.gov for more information.

Phishing scams

Scammers have begun using phishing scams related to the coronavirus pandemic in order to obtain personal and financial information.  Phishing scams usually involve unsolicited phone calls, emails, text messages, or fake websites that pose as legitimate organizations and try to convince you to provide personal or financial information. Once scam artists obtain this information, they use     it to commit identity or financial theft.    Be wary of  anyone claiming to be from an official organization, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization,  or nongovernment websites  with domain names that include the words "coronavirus" or "COVID-19," as they are likely to be malicious.

Charity fraud

Many charitable organizations are dedicated to helping those affected by COVID-19.  Scammers often pose as legitimate charitable organizations in order to     solicit donations from unsuspecting donors. Be wary of charities with names     that are similar to more familiar or nationally known organizations. Before     donating to a charity, make sure that it is legitimate and never donate cash, gift cards, or funds by wire transfer.  The IRS website has a tool     to assist you in checking out the status of a charitable organization at  irs.gov/charities-and-nonprofits.

Protecting yourself from scams

Fortunately,  there are some things you can do to protect yourself from scams, including those related to the coronavirus pandemic:
  • Don't click on suspicious or unfamiliar links in     emails, text messages, and instant messaging services.
  • Don't answer a phone call if you don't recognize the phone  number — instead, let it go to voicemail and check later to verify the caller.
  • Never download email attachments unless you can verify that     the sender is legitimate.
  • Keep device and security software up-to-date, maintain strong passwords, and use multi-factor authentication.
  • Never share personal or financial information via email, text message, or over the phone.
  • If you see a scam related to the coronavirus, be sure to report it to the FTC at  ftc.gov/complaint.

Elderflower continuing!

I have finished two repeats of the pattern. I have five more to go! Rows 2 through 5.

The pattern is fairly rhythmic and each row is easy to remember - for me I have to refresh before starting each one, and take care on the ends. Have been known to mis read it!

I gave the dogs some bones, like the Nylabones. They are keeping them pretty busy so the poor things crash after dinner exhausted from chasing each other around wanting the others bone. They all have one, but they want what the other one has. With four, it is a race back and forth like the Kentucky Derby!

Three of the four passed out. Looks almost they were playing Ring Around the Rosie!

I just finished the jigsaw puzzle "Merlin and Arthur." The pieces were all cut strangely so it wasn't as easy to join up as I thought it would be. Glad it is over - but did enjoy it mostly.

Now I am starting one from one of my favorite painters, Charles Wysocki. I love the classic Americana puzzles. Another favorite is Eric Dowdle. I must have 20 of his still waiting for me, and one more Wysocki. Then a couple odd ball ones.  I'm putting them together, putting my initials on the box, and donating them to Goodwill. The other grandmother shops there and once gave me back one as a gift for Christmas that I donated! I wish to avoid another faux pas!

I pray you are all home enjoying this time together. Back to the basics! Time to actually read, talk, discuss, and play together. My dad was a big jigsaw puzzle person. He is also the one who watched boxing on TV. I remember telling him I wanted the one in the lighter pants to win. We had black and white TV so didn't know the colors! I also remember the Pabst Blue Ribbon music, and the girls walking around with big signs each round.

It is time for you to make memories of sharing interests with your children and other family members. Write long emails full of photos, memories, etc.

Blessings

Elderflower Shawl

This is the new anniversary shawl that Michele DuNaier designs each year on the anniversary of opening her on line group on Ravelry.  I have only made one, I think, but plan to go back and make all 8.

This is how it looked a couple of days ago. For some reason I seem to like the colors she chooses, but in all honesty this time it was the first fingering weight yarn I came upon so grabbed it.

The yarn is Cascade Yarn's Heritage Silk. I love the hand and the drape so far. Very soft and cozy.
May not block the shawl. I am thinking of making it as more of a scarf, with long ends.

I started out increasing the starting chain by one shell on each side of the middle. I have no clue if that will make it just a little longer or a lot longer, so this is an experiment.  I increased the chain less the five for the turning chain.

As you can see three of my dogs, the youngest, are all making themselves at home on the deck. These couches have been relegated to being "doggie couches" for the last year or two. My husband and his first wife always had a "doggie couch" and we ended up having them, too.

Below a few of the Iris in my yard when I lived in Idaho. I love them so much….hope I can have a gazillion in my next home!

Hope this finds you home, safe, happy and healthy!

Get your yarn out and relax!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

HOME-SWEET-HOME

The Spring flowers are beginning to make a  showing (along with some dandelions!).  I had my tulips planted late this year, so they may not put forth the root system they need to survive.
The Naked Lady I planted two years ago rotted out I think. I need to be in a dryer climate, and perhaps warmer, for them to survive. We had them in South Carolina and in San Diego.  I tried planting them in Idaho, but they weren't happy. Don't know if they survived.
Below is in my front yard along side of the driveway. Daffodils and Iris, along with California Golden Poppies. They survived all winter it was so mild!

Below is in front of the fence line at the front of the front yard….mouthful to say fast! Only some of these were planted by me…most are survivors from the previous owner's plantings.

Very early this morning there seemed to be more snow on the mountains. It was quite chilly and serene. The sun was just barely coming up…the joys of having dogs waking the dead at O'dark hundred!

My neighbors decorative plum trees. So beautiful!

These are the Wallflowers that always bloom first in the backyard. Forgot what the little purple ones are, but they don't stay little. They get huge. Might be the Silver Dollar plant.

No crocheting to show. I started knitting on a scarf for myself but it is slow going. The virus has only made me lazier instead of more productive.  You know Gone With The Wind? Well, I'm in that frame of mind….I can do it tomorrow!

Since I have time, I need to find the energy and start photographing projects.

You have a safe and delightful day. I'm looking forward to the day when I am all moved into a nice new clean house in Texas!
